What About Unpaid Interns
What about unpaid interns? Are they legal?
Yes, the legality of unpaid interns has been in the news a lot lately. Unfortunately, there has been poor and conflicting information, rumors, and scare tactics that have scared many businesses and organizations from having unpaid interns. Some have even discontinued their internship programs as a result, which is a shame because there needs to be more internships, not less.
The fact is that unpaid internships are legal (when done right – we’ll show you how!), and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The U.S. government has unpaid interns in almost every branch and office, and they are the ones who make the laws! If they passed a law banning unpaid internships, our government would literally be crippled.
We can tell you with confidence that unpaid internships are still
a viable option for any for-profit or non-profit organization.
That doesn’t mean that everyone should offer unpaid internships; depending on your goals and needs, sometimes paid internships are better. The Super Interns System™ clearly lays out the pros and cons of paid and unpaid internships, and the legal, tax, and insurance ramifications of each, to help you make an informed decision.
